NeuScience is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal welcoming original research contributions across all scientific disciplines. Please review these comprehensive guidelines carefully before preparing your manuscript.

1. Scope and Coverage

NeuScience publishes high-quality original research, reviews, and scholarly communications in all areas of natural and applied sciences. We particularly encourage:

  • Innovative research with potential for significant scientific impact
  • Interdisciplinary studies bridging multiple scientific fields
  • Research addressing global challenges (health, environment, sustainability)
  • Studies with strong methodological rigor and reproducibility
  • Negative results that advance scientific understanding

2. Types of Submissions

Before submitting, please select the appropriate article type. See our Article Types page for detailed specifications.

  • Research Articles – Full-length original research (4,000-8,000 words)
  • Review Articles – Comprehensive literature reviews (6,000-10,000 words)
  • Brief Communications – Short reports of significant findings (2,000-3,000 words)
  • Case Studies – Detailed case analyses (2,500-4,000 words)
  • Commentaries – Opinion pieces on current topics (1,500-2,500 words)
  • Letters to the Editor – Responses to published articles (500-1,000 words)

3. Language and Style

3.1 Language Requirements

  • All manuscripts must be written in clear, grammatically correct English (American or British spelling, but consistent throughout)
  • Authors whose first language is not English are strongly encouraged to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission
  • Avoid jargon; define technical terms at first use
  • Use active voice where appropriate for clarity
  • Write in third person for research articles; first person is acceptable for commentaries and editorials

3.2 Writing Style

  • Be concise and precise – avoid unnecessary words
  • Use short paragraphs (4-6 sentences recommended)
  • Define all abbreviations at first use (except standard SI units)
  • Use internationally recognized nomenclature and symbols
  • Report statistics with appropriate precision (generally 2-3 significant figures)

4. Manuscript Formatting

4.1 General Format Requirements

4.2 Manuscript Structure

Research articles should follow the IMRAD format. All manuscripts must include:

Title Page (Page 1)

  • Title: Concise, informative, max 150 characters (avoid abbreviations)
  • Running Title: Max 50 characters
  • Authors: Full names (First Middle Last), numbered affiliations
  • Affiliations: Department, Institution, City, Country
  • Corresponding Author: Name, full postal address, email, phone
  • ORCID iDs: For all authors (highly recommended)
  • Word Count: Abstract and main text separately
  • Number of Figures/Tables: Listed

Abstract (Page 2)

  • Length: 250 words maximum
  • Structure: Background, Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusions
  • Content: Self-contained summary; no references, no abbreviations (except standard)
  • Keywords: 4-6 keywords below abstract (not in title, for indexing)

Main Text Sections

  1. Introduction: Background, knowledge gap, objectives, significance (no subheadings recommended)
  2. Materials and Methods: Sufficient detail for reproducibility; include ethics statements, statistical methods
  3. Results: Clear presentation of findings; do not duplicate data in text and figures/tables
  4. Discussion: Interpretation, comparison with literature, limitations, implications
  5. Conclusions: Key findings and their significance (may be combined with Discussion)

Back Matter

  • Acknowledgments: Non-author contributors, technical assistance
  • Funding: All funding sources with grant numbers
  • Conflicts of Interest: All authors must declare (or state "None")
  • Author Contributions: CRediT format (e.g., "JD: Conceptualization, Writing; AB: Methodology, Analysis")
  • Data Availability: Statement on data access
  • Ethics Statement: IRB/IACUC approval details
  • References: APA 7th Edition format

5. Figures, Tables, and Supplementary Materials

5.1 Figures

  • Use color-blind-friendly palettes when possible
  • Include scale bars for microscopy images

5.2 Tables

  • Number tables consecutively (Table 1, Table 2, etc.)
  • Provide descriptive titles above each table
  • Submit as editable text, not images
  • Use horizontal lines only (top, bottom, below headers)
  • Define abbreviations in footnotes
  • Use superscript letters (a, b, c) for footnotes

5.3 Supplementary Materials

Large datasets, additional figures, videos, code, and extended methods may be submitted as supplementary files:

  • Label as "Supplementary Figure S1", "Supplementary Table S1", etc.
  • Provide a separate supplementary materials document with captions
  • Videos: MP4 format, max 50 MB, include still image
  • Data files: CSV, Excel, or discipline-appropriate formats
  • Code: Include README with instructions

6. References

Use APA 7th Edition citation style. All references must be cited in the text and vice versa.

6.1 In-Text Citations

  • One author: (Smith, 2024) or Smith (2024)
  • Two authors: (Smith & Jones, 2024)
  • Three+ authors: (Smith et al., 2024)
  • Multiple citations: (Smith, 2020; Jones, 2022; Lee et al., 2024)
  • Direct quote: (Smith, 2024, p. 45)

7. Ethical Requirements

7.1 Human Subjects Research

  • Approval from Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Ethics Committee required
  • Include approval number and institution name in Methods
  • Confirm informed consent was obtained
  • Follow Declaration of Helsinki guidelines
  • Protect participant privacy; no identifying information without consent

7.2 Animal Research

  • IACUC or equivalent ethics approval required
  • Follow ARRIVE guidelines for reporting
  • Describe housing, husbandry, and welfare measures
  • Justify animal numbers and minimize suffering

7.3 Conflicts of Interest

All authors must disclose any financial or non-financial interests that could influence the research:

  • Funding sources and sponsor involvement
  • Employment, consultancies, or board positions
  • Stock ownership or patents
  • Personal relationships that could bias the work

8. Submission Process

8.1 Before You Submit

  • Manuscript follows all formatting guidelines
  • All authors have approved the final version
  • Work is original and not under consideration elsewhere
  • All references are complete and accurate
  • Figures and tables are publication-ready
  • Ethics approvals are documented
  • Conflicts of interest are declared
  • Cover letter is prepared
